Chris Glaser is a self-employed carpenter artist. While his early influences were found in nature, he counts Tolkien, Dali, Durer, Kahlo, Escher, Jung and Hendrix among those whose creative genius helped transform his dreamscape visions into imaginative works in his unique story picture style. He likes a picture to be well connected throughout, so that, at a glance, you are drawn into your own story. The viewer’s conclusion may or may not be what his original intention was, but it helps keep the story going and the painting alive.
From pencil and pastels, his work has evolved into oils, watercolors, and stone sculpture. He creates in the special “artistic climate” in the village of Yellow Springs, Ohio, his home for 30 years. Carpentry has been an artistic outlet for many years, both through design and the woodworking itself. Chris also uses his art as a therapeutic tool in helping others deal with loss. The client’s personal engagement with the art creates a compassionate space for grief work. The result usually involves a portrait that contains various connections to that person such as a place, a particular time, an event, and symbols. He feels his experience with children’s workshops, like mask making and drawing to music or poetry, is particularly effective in opening young minds to the creative process. He is also a musician, playing guitar, mandolin and the Native American flute. He continues to develop his artistic skills, dream new visions, and create new projects in the hope they will fill a need or induce an inspiration with an appreciative audience.
